Calvin
Breed: Thoroughbred Age: 14
Rescued: 2009
Calvin, racing name “Sandy Flyer” had to be euthanized in February because he shattered his left front pastern. We don’t know how it happened, but there was no other choice for him. What was amazing to me was that even though it had to hurt really badly, he managed to drag himself up the hill to let me know something was wrong. I was home alone and sitting outside when I suddenly saw him at the fence line shaking terribly. As long as I was petting him and talking to him he didn’t shake as badly while we waited for the vet to arrive. When Calvin first arrived at HCW, he was confused and very insecure as he had been passed through many hands before he got here. As time went on and safety welcomed him along with some work on his ground manners, he became a more secure horse and was used as part of our special needs program. TLC and some basic attitude adjustments can go a long way. He is missed for the horse he became.
Original Story
CALVIN, aka Sandy Flyer, a 14-year-old Thoroughbred, was born and raised to be a racehorse. He ran 7 races never placing in the top three. As with many unsuccessful racehorses, he was given away to his then new owner and never had the opportunity to be retrained to do something he could do. After changing hands many, many times and finally reaching the point where no one even wanted to bother with him anymore, he finally found his way to Heaven Can Wait to live out his life. With time and steady handling, we are confident he will become a happy and useful horse to help those who visit us for equine assisted therapy of any type .
